Step 1: Get to know the chair

Tearing down a chair is a thoughtful process, assessing original design elements and identifying its construction process.  The bones are entirely stripped clean and the wood restored.  Pictures are taken and make patterns made, so that the inspirational original form and detailing are not lost.

Step 2: Envision something new

The form of the chair is Melissa's inspiration, and the fabric her paint.  Design begins with a trip to the fabric store, looking for an anchor fabric or two to build a design around.  Complementary colors, patterns and textures are always the important, to create the richest result.  Any pattern is woven into fabric (rather than printed on it) to ensure durability.

Swatches in hand, a sketch is created—to determine fabric quantities and identify trimming needs.

Step 3: Build out the form

Traditional upholstery techniques and materials ensure that chairs last.  Melissa is classically trained in upholstery, and aims for a mid-century look without some man-made materials that have not stood the test of time.

Step 4: Bring the sketch to life

Using the design sketch as a guide, fabrics are applied to the new chair.  Seams are machine or hand-sewn to ensure a tight fit, and then tacked into place. 

Step 5: Take a seat!

Last, the chair is carefully reviewed and--you guessed it--sit tested!  Any necessary revisions are made, and finishing touches added.  When you take one of our chairs home, you’ll have a numbered work of art built just for your living room.  

Each chair comes with its original design sketch and re-upholstery notes (sewn into the chair base, so they’re waiting for you!).
